The Correction Project

Last night I was reading A List Apart and on their front page was a link to the "Editor's Choice" article. It was a great article and I clicked on the author's link at the bottom of the page. I was sent to a parked domain page on some webhost.

There are a few points I want to make about this:

1) The article was from 2002, so linkrot is to be expected.

2) A List Apart is a premier web design/development site, and shouldn't have linkrot.

3) I tweeted the Editor and got an immediate response back that it would be fixed.

4) It was fixed.

Having a blog since 2002, I figured I had some linkrot of my own. Boy, do I ever.

Naturally, my first month blogging was very prolific and I had to kill about half of the posts. Many of the surviving posts needed editing to either update URLs or remove entire sections. Others were removed simply to save face.

I was amazed at how many links were still good.

I know some other bloggers read this. Have any of you done a similar exercise?

This project will be ongoing. Please revisit as updates are made.

Public Television showed a lot of neat educational shows during the day back in the 70's and 80's. One of them was Thinkabout. which was designed for "fifth and sixth grade students to understand their learning process in topics as varied as language arts, mathematics, study skills, as well as thinking skills."

This was one show that stuck with me. Unfortunately, it is also a show that the AIT has not released to the public. I would like to watch some of those episodes again.

A fascinating article by Henry Walcott called "Ethnographers sans Ethnography" documents the inception of the program and it's goals.

I wonder if there is any programming available today is similar to Thinkabout?

The interview is on an episode of AirTalk today (7/31) and was very good. Unfortunately, the site seems to only have it in Real Audio format.

The article is at Skeptic Magazine in a PDF file. There are 85 endnotes on this thing, so you know it has to be good.

As for the magazine itself, I find it sensationalist and just itching to pick a fight. The article is worth reading though.

This is getting so easy now

I was going to post some really trippy videos of Tangerine Dream performing "Ricochet" live. This was when electronic music needed banks of equipment (and, apparently, 100's of candles.) Then I was going to post a link to "Love on a Real Train" from the Risky Business soundtrack as a way of saying "You've heard these guys before."

Monday Night Treat

I sat next to the San Francisco Twins at dinner tonight. They are a fixture here in SF, so I am sure they go unnoticed, but to a tourist like me it was a hoot. She Wants Revenge "Tear You Apart" VS The Knack "My Sharona"

Granted, the guy just wanted to do a creepy remix of a creepy song, but when you try to remix She Wants Revenge, if you do it with anything from the late 70's/early 80's, it is overkill. She Wants Revenge is a great band that has somehow managed to appropriate and expand on several different styles from that period and create an excellent album. I did like the mix, though, being a big fan of The Knack as well.

Justin Warfield, one of the pair behind SWR, also created one of the best trip-hop albums I have ever heard, "My field trip to Planet 9." Again, he is just great at borrowing styles and making them his own.

A visit to Bullworth Academy

Wrong in so many ways

There are a couple of ads in the latest Alaska Airlines in-flight magazine that had me scratching my head.

1) An ad for a Spanish Language CD learning set that showed a picture of the Chichen Itza Mayan Pyramid with the tag line:

If they start old habits, wouldn't you want to know how to talk them out of it?

How this kind of thing got past any kind of person who didn't say "um...do you think that might be considered just a teensy bit racist?" is beyond me.

Maybe some of the tour guides at the site are still Mayan, but a majority of those would be catholic and still speak Mayan as well as Spanish and English.

I would think that if you found a Mayan that was still somehow into a human sacrifice to the Rain God, he is not going to be appeased by your begging for your life en espanol.

2) An ad for the "latest non-gaming hotel in Las Vegas." A google search shows there are a lot of these hotels with rates in the hundreds of dollars a night.

What the hell is the point of that? Why else would you be in the middle of a freaking desert if you weren't there to gamble?

If your convention is in Vegas, it is because folks want to gamble, otherwise you'd be in New York or San Francisco, or some other civilized place.

Is it a way for the compulsive gambler to tell his wife that going to the convention in Vegas will be okay, because the hotel won't have a craps table? C'mon! The airport there has dozens of slot machines. I won $11 there the last time I had a layover. The purpose of Vegas is to get drunk and gamble. If you aren't doing that, you just plain shouldn't be there.

Is it a snob appeal thing? "We will put you in the middle of hell on earth, but at least you won't hear those awful slot machines on the way up to your room?"

For the more puritanical visitors just seeing a relative? Look, you are in both Sodom AND Gomorrah at that point, visiting a relation that you no doubt see as some sort of degenerate. Get over it and just stay at the Stardust. The rooms are only $29 and you will have something to be outraged about when you get back home and go to church.

What the hell is wrong with you people? (part LXXII)

I saw a bumper sticker on an SUV today that said "Health Care is not a right." I thought that was slightly nuts, so I checked out the organization that sponsored that enlightened sentiment, Americans for free choice in medicine.

Here is a snippet of one of their arguments (taken from here) :

The American concept of it is officially stated in the Declaration of Independence. It upholds man's unalienable, individual rights. The term "rights," note, is a moral (not just a political) term; it tells us that a certain course of behavior is right, sanctioned, proper, a prerogative to be respected by others, not interfered with—and that anyone who violates a man's rights is: wrong, morally wrong, unsanctioned, evil.

Now our only rights, the American viewpoint continues, are the rights to life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness. That's all. According to the Founding Fathers, we are not born with a right to a trip to Disneyland, or a meal at Mcdonald's, or a kidney dialysis (nor with the 18th-century equivalent of these things). We have certain specific rights—and only these.

It descends into more madness from there, including a bizarre bit about barbers.

What these pillars of the community fail to realize is that without providing basic health care to all, we run the risk of people going to emergency rooms only when they are really really sick instead of taking advantage of preventative care or seeing a physician when a problem is treatable cheaply. Of course, common sense isn't going to change their minds, since medical care isn't their main goal. This messages of rights is simply code for "brown people who aren't from here, illegal or not."

These immigrants, legal or not, provide a huge amount of labor that, quite frankly, we Americans don't want to do. Do you want to spend 6 days a week stooped over cutting artichokes? Do you want to clean my toilet? Do you want to cook my food? These highly moral folks want all of the benefits of an economy where prices are kept artifically low via the use of this incredibly cheap labor, but don't want to give these same people vaccinations or decent medical care.

The American Academy of Family Physicians has a great article on the types of health problems present in immigrants and refugees. In a nutshell, they do have some health issues that need attention and until we decide on a sane and sustainable immigration policy that lets the people who want to work come here and work within the system, these health problems can just as easily affect everyone.

When will they have an "Attractiveness" function?

You might already be aware that CBS photoshopped 20 pounds off of a picture of Katie Couric for use in one of it's internal publications. (Thanks, My So-Called Penis!)

As it happens, you don't need to own photoshop (or even a computer) to do the same thing to your own photos. HP now offers a "slimming" option on their cameras. I thought this was a joke based on current events, but it is really on HP's site.

Any ideas on other things HP can add to their cameras to enhance photos?

Quality Television

We are almost through devouring the first season DVD set of House, MD. The second season is being released this week and the third will premiere on September 5th. We really haven't watched much network tv for the last few years, so to find a show we like so much is great.

It is one of those shows where you pause and go back and look at a detail. Some are very subtle, like when you see his apartment number is 221B or when the jazz musician patient is played by Harry Lennix (Commander Locke from the Matrix movies) and in a 1/2 second pan over his albums one is called "Mindtrikz" and has a matrix looking cover. My favorite little moment was when you see his DVR list and it shows that he has recorded a Monster Truck Jam, Spongebob and Black Adder!

There is also a Columbo-type thing happening where he has to catch people's lies so he can cure them. The writing is very tight, every detail is put in to foreshadow the eventual correct diagnosis. Another running theme is tying what is happening to patients in the clinic to that week's mystery case. I can go on and on. It's a good solid entertaining program.

All of this was prompted by reading a cool post on Metafilter highlighting the similarities between House and Sherlock Holmes.

Snakes on a Cake, redux

This morning, I saw the Snakes on a Cake picture I posted last month on Defamer, well on it's way to become a full blown meme. I am elated. It's lineage is pure (sciatica->grow-a-brain->slashfood->defamer->???) and I know that I can take credit for it. Veteran readers of this site (all six of you!) know that this is a huge bug up my butt, so to see the system work is awesome.

What makes this more special is that I found this pic via the Toothpaste For Dinner Live Journal Image Feed. To give you some background on Live Journal, pretty much every picture posted by a member makes it to the feed and there are a lot of members posting pictures constantly. This means that a new picture is on the feed for no more than a minute or two, then is only found if you stumble upon the page. It is extremely ephemeral. That is it's ultimate charm. Well, that and girls taking half naked pictures of themselves in the bathroom mirror.

What was I talking about?

Oh, yeah, the cake picture. LJ users also have the option to make their posts private or public - but if you catch a pic from the feed, you can usually see the page before it goes private ("Friends Only"). That is what I was able to do with the cake picture.

What this means is that I happened on the "golden moment" seconds after the picture was posted by the original user. I believe this also means that anyone else who posts that pic on their site/blog/whatever without attribution to one of the sites above had to have either:

1- had the same luck I had and was reading the feed at the same minute I was
2- has a program that saves an archive of the feed so they can look at it later
3- knows the person who posted the pic in the first place
4- took it from one of the sites listed above and pretended they found it themselves
5- it was on snakesonablog and i somehow missed it.

A google search has already found several sites that either had good luck (1-3) or are just thieving sacks of shit (4).
