I quit smoking about 7 1/2 years ago and I still miss it. This ASKME post about the purpose and use of a lucky cigarette got me all nostalgic for coughing up a lung.
For the record, I usually smoked hardpacks and would pack, open, remove the foil, pop the bottom and the one that rose the highest was the lucky that got turned over.
I have found it helpful to do the stretching exercises my physical therapist recommends. Do some core strengthening exercises, such as the ones highlighted at The Mayo Clinic. By keeping your core strong, your back won't put itself in a position to cause that sciatica pain you are having.
