i still remember in my mind how things used to be
Great video of the Godspeed You Black Emperor piece, They Don't Sleep Anymore On The Beach. This is from the cd, Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven. It looks like the film was uploaded by the producer, but I don't know if it is official or not. Either way, the only thing more cool than hearing an album start with that bit is seeing this video.
Smoke, Smoke, Smoke that cigarette
I quit smoking about 7 1/2 years ago and I still miss it. This ASKME post about the purpose and use of a lucky cigarette got me all nostalgic for coughing up a lung.
For the record, I usually smoked hardpacks and would pack, open, remove the foil, pop the bottom and the one that rose the highest was the lucky that got turned over.
Why is Kirk Cameron trying to kill me?
Read how a new video game will have you killing infidels on the streets of NYC in the The purpose Driven Life Takers.
The first thing I though of when I started reading that was Rod Flanders playing a video game that converted heathens. To his credit, the article mentions that and how to get to the game on The Simpsons site!
I am of the opinion that violent video games do not translate into a violent real life. However, after reading the above link about the new "Left Behind" Christian video game and the forces behind it (Including some people from my own back yard), I am not so sure. I can just see those suv's with the HARVEST bumperstickers and silhouettes of their families on the back stopping at a light and junior coming at me with a baseball bat asking if I want to be saved.
On the plus side, you can play the "other" side in this game, so maybe it's worth giving a shot when it hits the bargain bin. Going online against a group of fundies and killing them would be kinda nice.
For the record, my feelings about what the right wing Christians have done is summed up beautifully by Bill Moyers on the footer of my blog. Scroll down to read it.

I want one, too!

They are passionate about packaging
From Amazing Packaging Facts:
When Gerber baby foods began to sell in parts of Africa, they continued to use their
usual packaging, with the cute baby on the front. They didn't realize until later that where they were selling it, it was a common practice to help illiterate people buy things by putting pictures on the wrapper of what was inside.
I checked that one out on Snopes and, while the 1958 Reader's Digest example makes it seem as though it could be possible, it is taken as a myth. So, the rest of the "facts" might be a bit suspect as well.

(shown during the coverage of F1 qualifying for Monaco)
Michael Schumacher was just stripped of the pole he won during qualifying for stopping in the middle of the track during the closing seconds of the session. This was so incredibly blatant - I am still shocked they docked him for it, being Shumi and all. There is now an ALL FERRARI back row, since Massa decided to hit the wall in the opening round of qualifying.
I am a recent F1 convert, and this is just amazing - not only is the race this weekend at Monaco, which is a great course, but there is drama!
If you can keep from reading the internet tomorrow morning, in the States, CBS is showing the race on 5 hour tape delay in the morning. This promises to be an excellent show. You can watch the GP2 race live on Speed at 3am Pacific time.
good as a wink
"If you want to sell a guest a particular brand of liquor, nod your head slowly as you mention the brand. For extra effect, repeat the brand at the beginning and end of the list of brands you recite, e.g. "Well, we have Absolut (nod), Brands X, Y, Z, Q and R, and Absolut (nods again)".
This technique is called the Sullivan Nod and it works about 90% of the time - and no, nobody ever notices when you're doing it."

As I said earlier, in addition my usual picture sources from the past, I will be running around flickr looking for things that catch my eye. If I find the pic myself, I will just link to the page - if I see it at another site first, I will give attribution.
More than a feeling
As a suburban boy, I cannot help but smile when hearing anything by Boston. I just get off on that "Boston Guitar Sound." According to The BOSTON Homepage: Equipment List, the organ used on the first three ablums was the Hammond M Series. This page at theaterorgans.com has just about all the info you would ever want to know about Hammonds, including scans from an old catalog and a link to the story of The Quest for the Elusive B-3.
I have already received emails from you about my upcoming surgery. Thank you for the support and prayers. Knowing that someone actually still reads this is very reassuring.
I am trying as hard as I can to reach into this monitor and give you all a big kiss!
As a cube dweller at a startup software company with options, I sometimes get a little stressed out. On a recent business trip, I took the time to reread Mike Daisey's 21 Dog Years: doing time @ amazon.com. Oddly enough, it has been retitled "21 Dog Years, a cube dweller's tale." While I am not at the stage to bail on my options, it is both interesting and scary to see certain parallels between my own situation and the one described in his excellent book.
I, too, have lived the life of a dilettante. This blog (while I was updating it, at least) should attest to that.
I came across Mike's blog this morning and was really enchanted by it. Random Pics, coupled with cool links and wry observations. I used to do that. I think I will use this and my impending surgery as a sign to take this up again.
Thanks, Mike! I wish I could see one of your shows, the L. Ron Hubbard sounds like it would be fantastic.

The bone graft part is kind of interesting - I don't know exactly how good I feel about getting part of someone else absorbed into me. I guess it is like getting blood, but just a little weirder. Allograft is the technical term for it.
Anyway, I will be posting a bit more often leading up to the surgery (approximately 10 to 14 days.) My email address is off to the side there if anyone has any questions.
UPDATE: Surgery is the morning of Friday, June 2, 2006. With luck, I should be home by Monday the 5th. I will keep you posted.

Will resume posting soon
I have to wait for a human from blogger to validate that I am just a lazy human who hasn't posted in months to get that "captcha" thing removed that I referred to so nicely in my last post.
To the blogger human:
I am human, too. Please remove the captha thing, as it makes it really hard for a handicapped person to post. The listen and type thing is cool, but the thing I have trouble with is the typing. I compose in another app and post here. Thanks.
